Brushing your Teeth

February 24, 2012 / Shannon / Art/Craft, Children, Literacy/education, Picture Books
0

We learned about something important this week in Explorastory:  Keeping your teeth clean!  I showed the kids a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.  We talked about how to brush and floss and how often.  We want to keep our teeth clean and healthy!

Books:

“Does a Lion Brush?” by Fred Ehrlich, M.D.

“Clarabella’s Teeth” by An Vrombaut

“Maisy, Charley, and the Wobbly, Tooth” by Lucy Cousins

I introduced to the children my favorite alligator puppet.  We learned in “Does a Lion Brush?” that alligators have around 70 teeth!  Can you believe it?  That would take a long time to brush all those teeth (see “Clarabella’s Teeth”).

Songs about Brushing Your Teeth:

“Brush Your Teeth” from Raffi’s Singable Songs Collection

“Hands are for Clapping” from Jim Gill’s Jim Gill Sings the Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes

“Open Wide Look Inside at the Dentist” from The Wiggles’ Top of the Tots

Rhymes:

We then did a rhyme with pictures.  I printed out an image of a big mouth and some small germs.  I also used a piece of yarn to use as floss and used this rhyme:

Five Little Germs

Five little germs went out to play,

in a child’s mouth one day,

Five little germs went out to play,

until we flossed and one went away.

Four… Three… Two… One…

No little germs are in my mouth,

Because I went and flossed them out,

Now when the dentist looks inside,

No little germs are left to hide!

Art Project:

We made our own “chompers” by taking a piece of colored oval cardstock and gluing small marshmallows around the rim.

Each child was able to take a piece of yarn home along with their teeth.  This way, they can practice flossing.
